CPIWO began offering clinical trials &  cancer "protocols"  in February 2008.

---------------------

Clinical trials and clinical research at Chattanooga's Program in Women's Oncology must first be approved by an Institutional Review Board, which includes doctors, administrators, ethicists and members of the general public. Volunteers are fully informed of possible risks and sign a consent form before being accepted into a clinical trial.

Research

Chattanooga ’s Program in Women’s Oncology (CPIWO) is a member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG). this is a national cooperative group sponsored through the National Cancer Institute (NCI), dedicated to improving care in women with cancer.  Selected trials will now be available.  We also participate in trials sponsored through pharmaceutical companies.  We believe this gives the women in the South Eastern Tennessee Region the opportunity to participate in research that may be the next best treatment for their disease; it also gives women a chance to help other women with the same condition.

GOG Mission Statement: " The Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) is a non-profit organization (national) with the purpose of promoting excellence in the quality and integrity of clinical and basic scientific research in the field of Gynecologic malignancies. The Group (gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, statisticians, basic scientists, quality of life experts, data managers and administrative personnel is committed to maintaining the highest standards in clinical trials development, execution, analysis and distribution of results. Continuous evaluation of our processes is utilized in order to constantly improve the quality of patient care." For more info, visit the GOG website at: www.gog.org .

 What is Clinical Research?

Clinical research, which involves clinical trials and other research protocols, are strictly controlled human studies of new and emerging therapies. This type of research involves real people participating in studies that are done to test whether a new drug, a new prevention strategy, or a new screening test is safe and effective in people.Clinical research allows doctors from various disciplines to evaluate new forms of treatment, how best to apply recent developments in medicine, and to ensure that patients have the opportunity to receive the latest state-of-the-art care
